A (not so) short overview of the Geographic Information System GRASS

By Matteo Dell'Omodarme and Giada Valle

The aim of this article is to introduce the GRASS GIS software and to show its basic usage. As with all GIS software, it is quite complex: there is a huge number of features and controls, and non-trivial theoretical information is required even for basic use. Nevertheless, we think that the quick introduction presented here could be of some help for neophyte users who want to master a GIS program.

Not Screws and Bolts

By Kapil Hari Paranjape

The aim of these notes is to give you root access to a Debian "lenny" installation on on your existing computer without worrying about any hardware issues. To do this, you will not need to re-boot your computer, and will only append to the existing data on it.

Joey's Notes: The Red Hat Linux Boot Process

By Joey Prestia

Understanding the Linux boot process is crucial for being able to effectively troubleshoot a Linux system, when boot problems occur. For example, someone could have made some undocumented changes during the previous shift to a critical file that affects the boot process. Now, it's your shift, and you have to bring the machine down for a hardware upgrade. Upon boot up, the system crashes, and you're stuck there until you solve the issue. Learning the steps involved in the boot process, and knowing what happens at each phase, will help you quickly diagnose any problems that come up.
